WAXING
Waxing is a centuries-old technique for removing unwanted body hair. Women and men prefer waxing to other forms of hair removal because of its long-lasting results, and the way that it leaves skin feeling smooth.
However, wanting silky, hair-free skin is nothing new! The earliest records of body hair removal come from 4000 to 3000 B.C. An Ancient Egyptian medical text from about 1500 B.C. contains a recipe for their version of “Nair” that included burnt lotus leaf, tortoiseshell and hippo fat! Complete hair removal was the fashion in ancient Greece and Rome, as you may have noticed during a trip to the art museum. (1)
It’s also the fashion here in Florida! Dr. Mylissa’s Medical Boutique offers waxing services to help you get beach-ready, or just have sleek, silky skin that you can enjoy every day. To book a waxing appointment with one of her friendly, licensed estheticians, call our Delray Beach spa at (561) 330-9444.
HOW DOES WAXING REMOVE HAIR?
Waxing uses a specially-formulated heated wax that is applied to the skin in a thin layer. The wax attaches to the hair, and once the wax sets, it is quickly removed, taking the unwanted hair with it. But that’s not all: waxing also removes the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin, which is why freshly waxed skin feels so smooth. (1)
At Dr. Mylissa’s Medical Boutique, we use only the best wax, Cirépil, by Perron Rigot of Paris! This brand has been producing hair removal wax since 1936, and is the ultimate in comfort.
This wax has a special polymer that encases hair for ease of removal, particularly on difficult hair growths. It has a smooth application and virtually painless removal. Cirépil wax and its soothing pre-and post-wax lotions are designed with soothing and nourishing oils for added nourishment and happy skin.
BENEFITS OF WAXING
Over time, with regular waxing, you’ll have finer, more manageable hair.
Waxing is a versatile and effective hair removal technique. It can be used on nearly all areas of the body. When done properly, waxing is less likely to cause an unwanted rash, bumps, or other irritation than using an epilator or even shaving!
The chief advantage of waxing is that it pulls out hair from the root. This means that you’ll have an entire hair growth cycle to enjoy hairless skin. Shaving cuts hair above the skin at a sharp angle, which is why regrowing stubble can feel so prickly and unpleasant. When hair grows back after waxing, it’s an entirely new, younger hair, and usually softer and thinner than before.
Popular areas for waxing include:
- Armpits
- Back
- Legs
- Arms
- Chest
- Face: upper lip, hairline, jawline, sideburns
- Bikini Area
Waxing is a form of deep exfoliation. Besides just removing the top layer of dead skin cells, deep exfoliation stimulates collagen production and increases the efficacy of skincare creams and serums, since they can better penetrate the skin.
While there are at-home waxing kits, there certainly are advantages to having it done by a professional aesthetician – besides the pampering. A state license as an esthetician is required to perform hair removal services. During an esthetician’s training, they complete coursework that includes the anatomy and physiology of skin, the cycles of hair growth, and the different properties of light, dark, and sensitive skin. (2) Additionally, the premium wax brand Cirépil requires that its providers receive special training in order to use its products.
Leave it to the professionals! Waxing at home can leave you at risk for burns, irritation, and unless you’re especially flexible, neglecting an embarrassing section of hairy skin that is hard to see or reach!

CANDIDATES
Waxing is widely used all over the world and has been popular since ancient times, but it’s still not for everyone. Those with extra-sensitive skin might find waxing to be particularly uncomfortable. And even if you don’t usually think of yourself as sensitive, there are several factors that can make your skin more sensitive. For example, your skin might be more sensitive if you’ve been taking antibiotics. Radiation and chemotherapy can also increase skin sensitivity and dryness. Additionally, hormones can have an effect on the skin. If you’re menstruating, taking hormone replacements, or on hormonal birth control, waxing may feel a little extra spicy on your skin.
PEOPLE WHO HAVE THE FOLLOWING MAY NOT BE SUITABLE CANDIDATES FOR WAXING:
- Taking blood-thinning, autoimmune, or steroidal medications
- Taking oral acne medication or using retinoids
- Psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, or sensitive skin
- Sunburn
- Recent surgery
- Recent laser skin treatment, or other skin resurfacing treatments like chemical peels
- Severe varicose leg veins
- History of fever blisters or cold sores
PREPARATION
Before you come in for your waxing appointment, you’ll need to make sure your hair is at least ¼-inch long, so that the wax has a better chance of attaching to it. If it’s longer than ½ inch, you may want to trim it slightly so the wax is able to adhere evenly to the shaft area closest to the root.
- Make sure to exfoliate regularly and gently in the days before your appointment to help prevent ingrown hairs.
- Avoid tanning or the risk of sunburn for a day or two before your appointment.
- Wait to enjoy alcohol and caffeine until after your appointment. Tighter pores mean a less comfortable wax.
- Wear breathable, comfortable clothing to avoid irritating your skin afterwards.
- Pro-tip: pop an over-the-counter pain reliever about 30 minutes before your appointment if you’re worried about discomfort!
WAX ON, WAX OFF!
Depending on the areas you’ve decided to wax, you may need to undress before your wax starts. Your aesthetician will tell you exactly what to do, and ask about your preferences.
Next, your aesthetician will gently cleanse the area to ensure that the area is sanitized and that the wax can adhere effectively. She’ll then apply a nourishing oil to the skin to protect it.
Then, it’s time for the wax! Your skin will be slathered with a satiny layer of warm Cirépil wax. Depending on the type of wax, your technician may also apply cloth strips to the layer of wax. Once the wax sets up – away it goes! The wax will be quickly peeled away from the skin, and that unwanted hair with it. Once all the offending hairs are removed, your newly bare skin will be nourished with a special post-waxing oil and a soothing gel.
AFTER YOUR WAX AT DR. MYLISSA’S
Most patients remember their first waxing session being the most painful. After a wax, you may have some redness or sensitivity, but this usually only lasts a day or two- a small price to pay for several weeks of smooth, hairless skin! If you love your waxing results and want to make it a habit, don’t shave, pluck, or poke at hairs. You’ll need even growth and healthy skin so that your next wax will be able to remove the entire area of regrowth at once. It’s generally recommended to wait 6 weeks before your next waxing appointment to ensure the best results.
RESULTS
While hair growth depends on many factors, your results from waxing can actually last up to 6 weeks. However, most people notice new hair growth at around 3 to 4 weeks after their last session.
It’s important to take care of your skin in the meantime. When hair breaks during a wax, it’s not being removed by the root and will grow back faster. Dry or rough skin can make hair more fragile, so remember to baby your skin between waxing appointments.
HOW MUCH DOES A WAX COST IN DELRAY BEACH?
The cost of your wax will depend on which part of your body you choose to address, and whether you choose to treat yourself to any other services! You can contact our boutique to learn more about pricing for body waxing, and we hope to see you soon.
