Microblading is a cosmetic procedure that creates the appearance of fuller eyebrows. It has become one of the most sought-after aesthetic procedures due to the increased interest and awareness generated by social media. However, it is thought that permanent eyebrow makeup has existed since at least the time of Cleopatra’s reign!
The cosmetic tattooing technique involves using a small, handheld tool to manually create hair-like strokes in the eyebrow area to enhance or reshape their appearance. Eyebrows play a significant role in shaping the face and can greatly impact a person’s overall appearance. They help define the eyes and can give a person a more youthful, awake, and expressive look. Eyebrows can also help balance facial features and create symmetry, making a person’s face appear more proportionate. By changing the shape, thickness, or arch of eyebrows, a person can alter their appearance and enhance their natural beauty.

ABOUT MICROBLADING FOR THE EYEBROWS
Microblading is a cosmetic procedure that provides fuller eyebrows by applying hair-like strokes to the skin using a sterile blade and pigment. The effects of microblading typically last up to two years. The technique creates a natural, realistic look that enhances a person’s facial features and appearance. Microblading is a temporary but dramatic improvement for individuals who have:
- Overplucked their eyebrows
- Suffered hair loss
- Patchy areas that won’t grow back
- Undesired eyebrow shape
The shape of the eyebrows is determined based on the individual’s bone structure, face shape, and desired appearance.
Microblading has undergone numerous advancements in recent years, making it a versatile procedure with both cosmetic and dermatological applications, such as:
- Alopecia Totalis – A form of alopecia, a group of hair loss disorders that affects both men and women. In alopecia totalis, the immune system attacks hair follicles, causing them to shrink and stop producing hair. The condition can develop at any age, and the cause is unknown. There is currently no cure for alopecia totalis, but various treatments, including medications and hair-loss concealers like microblading, can help manage the symptoms.
- Hypothyroidism – A medical condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormones. This imbalance can cause various symptoms, including hair loss on the scalp, eyebrows, and other body parts. The hair may become thin and brittle or fall out completely. In some cases, hair loss may be permanent.
- Chemotherapy-Induced Hair Loss – Chemotherapy can cause hair loss, including eyebrow hair loss. Chemotherapy treatments target rapidly dividing cells, such as cancer cells, but also affects other rapidly dividing cells, such as hair follicles, leading to hair loss. The extent of hair loss can vary depending on the type and dose of chemotherapy and individual factors such as age, health status, and genetics. In most cases, the hair will grow back after chemotherapy, but it may take several months for the full effects to be seen and can be permanent in some cases.
IS MICROBLADING THE SAME AS TATTOOING?
Microblading differs from traditional eyebrow tattooing as it uses a manual tool instead of a machine. Additionally, microblading only penetrates the top layer of skin, while tattoos go deeper into the skin. As the skin regenerates, the pigment is pushed out, making microblading semi-permanent compared to more permanent and solid tattoos.
For patients with permanent hair loss in the eyebrows, microblading can benefit them by restoring the appearance of natural, full eyebrows. Microblading provides a solution for patients who have lost eyebrows due to chemotherapy or other conditions and want to regain a more youthful and expressive appearance. For patients who spend time every morning painting or drawing on their eyebrows, microblading can significantly cut down on their morning routine and provide a more long-lasting solution. Microblading creates natural-looking strokes, mimicking the look of actual eyebrow hair, which results in a more realistic and seamless appearance.
Eyebrows can change the appearance of a person’s face in a significant way. By altering the shape, thickness, or arch of the eyebrows, a person can enhance their natural beauty and change their overall look. A well-groomed and well-designed set of eyebrows can bring out the best in a person’s face, making it look more defined and polished.
If you have naturally thin or sparse eyebrows, microblading can help you achieve a fuller and more defined look. For patients with medical conditions that cause hair loss, microblading offers a temporary solution in the interim as their hair grows back. Microblading can help restore the appearance of over-plucked eyebrows by adding hair-like strokes to the area, creating a more balanced and symmetrical appearance.
Ideal candidates should have realistic expectations and be willing to undergo touch-up sessions as needed. Additionally, it’s important to carefully consider the color and shape of your desired brows to ensure they compliment your face and enhance your features.
If you have certain skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, or are taking blood-thinning medications, you may not be suitable for the procedure. It’s always best to consult a qualified professional to determine if microblading is right for you.

Injectable anesthesia is rarely necessary as the microblading blade only penetrates the papillary dermis, a shallow layer of skin. Most patients are comfortable with topical numbing.
A semi-permanent pigment is carefully applied during the procedure using a microblading blade made of very fine needles. The needles penetrate the skin simultaneously and at the same angle to create the appearance of individual hairs, giving the eyebrows a natural, fuller look.
Dr. Graber will stretch the skin to create maximum exposure. She will create dominant and supporting strokes to mimic the natural hair of the eyebrow.
The dominant strokes begin from the base of the eyebrow and extend throughout its full length, making them longer. Supporting strokes, on the other hand, start from the middle and blend into the main strokes. They are shorter in length and can be used to fill any gaps between the main strokes. Dr. Graber will take care to avoid intersecting the strokes to prevent blurring of the pigment.
At the conclusion of the microblading process, the pigment is evenly distributed throughout the eyebrow by gently smudging it; this is left in place for 5 minutes, which helps to ensure even retention of the pigment, as some areas may otherwise lose pigment due to small amounts of bleeding.
POST PROCEDURE RECOVERY
For the first 48 hours after microblading, avoiding touching the eyebrows, participating in heavy physical activity, and coming into contact with water are important. Only gently pat the face dry for cleaning.
During the following week, patients should be aware that scabbing and itching are normal, but picking or peeling off scabs may result in infection. Use of exfoliants, anti-aging creams, and astringents should be avoided, as well as makeup.
The face can be washed with water, but no soap or face wash should be used for the first week. Facewash can be started after one week. Swimming, steam rooms, and saunas should be avoided for two weeks post-treatment, and waxing or threading of the eyebrows should not be done for six weeks after the procedure.
As your eyebrows heal, avoid overexposure to sunlight and protect your skin by wearing sunglasses and applying sunscreen on exposed areas, which can cause the pigment to fade faster. If you have questions or concerns about your recovery, contact Dr. Mylissa’s Medical Boutique. We will be happy to assist you.
The results of microblading can vary depending on various factors such as skin type, age, aftercare, and technique used by the practitioner.
- Generally, microblading results are positive, giving the patient a more defined appearance and increased confidence.
- Full eyebrows can create a youthful look, transforming the aging face.
- Additionally, for patients who have hair loss due to a medical condition, something as simple as eyebrows can return a sense of normalcy to their lives.
The results of microblading should look natural, with the appearance of fuller and more defined eyebrows, providing a youthful and expressive appearance. However, it is important to note that individual results may vary and the desired look may not always be achieved. Furthermore, most microblading appointments will require at least one touch-up session due to color loss as a result of scabbing.
