LASER HAIR REMOVAL
Laser hair removal is a long-lasting solution that safely and effectively removes unwanted hair. This procedure uses targeted laser energy, so it’s non-invasive and non-surgical. Laser hair removal uses the power of light to target hair follicles. Other hair removal treatments only address the external hair growth – laser hair removal attacks hair at the source. As a result, fewer hairs are able to return, and after several sessions, patients have noticeably less hair. It allows patients to treat areas including the face, underarms, back, legs, chest, bikini area, and even the arms.
Say “so long” to shaving, waxing, tweezing, and those smelly depilatory creams. If you’re exhausted with the battle against unwanted body or facial hair, laser hair removal might be the answer to your problems. After a few sessions of laser hair removal, you’ll enjoy smooth skin that’s swimsuit-ready, year-round: it’s a must for our Florida lifestyle!

ABOUT THAT HAIR…
Your skin is home to millions of hair follicles, and producing hair is their job! Consequently, managing unwanted hair can be a constant and time-consuming struggle. There’s no end to the options available when it comes to hair removal. However, tweezing, threading, waxing, shaving, and sugaring (phew) are not long-lasting hair removal solutions, as you’ve doubtlessly learned. Plus, this methods also cost your skin. Ingrown hairs, irritation, nicks, cuts, and razor burn can be a high (and uncomfortable) price to be repeatedly paying for smooth skin. And within a few days, the hair is back.
If it seems like a waste of energy, that’s because you’re using the wrong kind: that’s where laser energy comes in.
Laser hair removal gets to the root of the problem. This technology safely penetrates the skin to target hair follicles using concentrated wavelengths of light. The highly pigmented hair shaft absorbs the energy to create a thermal effect that strategically damages the follicle, leaving it unable to produce more hair.
HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK?
Lasers are a powerful tool for cosmetic and medical purposes. At Dr. Mylissa’s Medical Boutique, we use them to remove tattoos, eliminate spider veins, and even treat toenail fungus!
Laser therapy has the unique ability to target certain tissues while avoiding damage to others.
For treatments like tattoo removal, spider veins, and laser hair removal, the laser treatment uses a process called selective photothermolysis. This means that the laser’s intense light is absorbed by the darker pigments present in the skin, whether tattoo ink, blood vessels, or hair. The result is a thermal effect that targets the tinted tissue. It’s similar to the reason you wouldn’t wear solid black in the summer – too hot.
When it comes to laser hair removal, the laser energy is absorbed by the melanin present in the hair root. The heat then damages the hair follicle, which is no longer able to produce hair, while the lighter-colored surrounding tissue is left unscathed. Your skin gets added protection from a cooling device built into this specialized hair removal application.

GOOD CANDIDATES
Who wouldn’t want to eliminate unwanted hair? Laser hair removal is most effective on those with dark, coarse hair, and lighter skin tones. The ideal candidate has healthy skin, and a significant difference in color from the hair, since the laser energy becomes concentrated in dark pigments. Those with darker skin, or with light-colored hair may be good candidates for thermolysis hair removal, another effective hair removal treatment.
Our friendly staff will be able to determine whether you’re a good candidate for laser hair removal or thermolysis during your personal consultation. To learn more about how we leave our patients radiant, read our reviews!
Laser hair removal is not for:
- Pregnant women
- Those with certain skin conditions like eczema or psoriasis
- Users of certain dermatological medications

A SMOOTH PREPARATION
Get ready to glow. But first, it’s important to make sure that the area being treated is properly prepped.
Before your laser hair removal session don’t:
- Wax or pluck the area being treated between or prior to sessions. Remember—you’ll need the root of the hair intact so that the laser energy can target it.
- Wear makeup, lotion, deodorant, or sunscreen to your treatment session
- Use fake tanning products for 3-4 weeks before your treatment.
- Go tanning or have prolonged sun exposure the month before
Do shave the treatment area 24 hours before your treatment. Longer hair will burn while being treated with the laser which can lead to an unpleasant experience.
PROCEDURE
Laser hair removal is a straightforward procedure. Many sessions often take under an hour, although the length of your session will depend on the number of areas you’ve chosen to treat, and how large they are.
Before your technician gets started, she’ll cleanse the area and apply a cooling gel. Laser treatments emit an intense light, so you’ll also be given protective goggles to wear.
The handheld laser device will be gently guided across your skin, creating a thermal effect in the hair follicles.
Our hair grows and regrows in stages. Laser energy is able to create photothermolysis in hair that is currently in the active growth phase. Not all hair is in the same phase of growth at the same time. While some hair is growing, other hairs are resting, shedding, or regenerating. As a result, you’ll need to return for additional sessions to ensure that all hair is able to be treated by the laser as it transitions into the active phase. During your session, the laser energy will be applied in short pulses, which may cause a slight stinging sensation. However, most patients report the sensation is tolerable, and only causes minimal discomfort.
AFTER YOUR LASER SESSION
You may notice some redness and sensitivity in the treatment area immediately after your session. No cause for alarm: this is a common reaction and will only last a few hours. Ice packs can help soothe the area.
To avoid any further aggravation to your skin in the following days, refrain from:
- Hot showers
- Saunas
- Fragrances and deodorants
Avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for at least the next six weeks. You will need to be vigilant with your sunscreen and sun protection as your skin will be sensitive, and prone to burning.
RESULTS
We know it can be hard to put a pause on your sun-worshipping, but your results will be worth the wait. Laser hair removal isn’t a quick fix, but it works. About a week or so after your laser session, you may find that the hair in the treated area seems more prominent. That’s because it’s about to fall out! Sayonara! After a few additional treatments you’ll notice significantly less hair, and eventually, you may find that you don’t have to think about hair removal anymore. Most patients see an 85% reduction in the amount of hair after a full course of treatments. Sounds pretty good, right?

F.A.Q.
DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK ON BLONDES?
Those with very light-colored hair may not be good candidates for laser hair removal, because the laser energy targets the dark pigmentation of the hair. Laser hair removal is ideal for those with dark hair and lighter skin. Hair removal techniques like thermolysis may be a better option for those with lighter hair or darker skin.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF LASER HAIR REMOVAL?
A laser hair removal session may cause slight swelling, sensitivity, and redness in some patients. Over-the-counter pain medication and icepacks can ease discomfort.
WHAT CAN'T I DO AFTER LASER HAIR REMOVAL?
In the first days after your treatment, avoid using perfumes and exfoliants. You’ll also want to avoid hot showers and saunas. Protect your treatment area from excessive sunlight in the months before and the days after your treatment.
